About Rohit Gulam

I’m a software engineer and technical partner based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I help founders take a product from an idea, or a half-built mess, to something real people can use.

I got started building WordPress sites for small businesses. That work taught me something most developers skip: a website or app is only useful if the person running the business can actually work with it. That lesson has stuck with me ever since.

Freelance Technical Partner, Rohit Gulam

These days my work looks less like “write the code” and more like “own the decisions.” For an EV mobility startup, I was the only engineer on the team. I owned every architecture and technology call, took the platform from nothing to a working MVP in nine weeks, and built it with the company’s real fleet, captain, and payment data in mind from day one, not as an afterthought bolted on later. I worked directly with leadership to decide what got built and when.

I’ve also led teams, not just solo-built products. For Dash, a ride-hailing platform I built for my university, I was technical lead over a team of four, personally handling most of the architecture and engineering (Laravel API, Nuxt/Vue frontend) while directing teammates on design and documentation. On another university project, I joined mid-build after another team had already started it, finished my share of the work, and then trained the incoming developers so they could keep building after I left.

Right now I split my time between two roles at a growth-focused SaaS platform: as a developer, shipping platform improvements and social integrations across TikTok and Instagram; and as growth manager, running the SEO and content strategy that brings users in. Building the thing and knowing why it needs to exist turn out to be closely related skills.

Outside of client work, I organize Google Developer Groups Dar es Salaam and lead Google Developer Student Clubs at UDSM, where I’ve run technical workshops for over 500 student developers and started a mentorship program pairing experienced developers with newcomers.

If you’re a founder trying to figure out the technical side of your company, that’s the conversation I want to have.
